We have all seen the analysis of doom and imminent collapse for some time now. China’s demographics are changing and some argue that it will be the factor ending China’s economic miracle.

Factually, a change is happening but let us look again, this time a bit more closely.

From the top down there are going to be technological changes happening automating several processes. When automation, for example, reaches sectors such as transportation the effects in numbers are going to be huge. Robots in industrial settings are an existing and growing factor. Other future and coming technologies will also have a large and growing impact in this regard.

From the bottom up we will see rural farmers moving into industrial and other sectors. China’s agricultural sector has a comparative efficiency that is far below Western standards. Food security has been officially declared of utmost national importance and many resources will be put into modernization going forward. The last numbers I saw put the rural agricultural population at 500 million people, about the population of the European Union. A lot of people will be moving into other sectors.

The shift from having the cheapest regional workforce will also mean changed structures in different ways, outsourcing to other countries being one example. The government will also introduce different measures that will, if not reverse, at least stabilise fertility rates. Other factors will also play a role.

**I do not think demographics will have a significant negative impact on the Chinese economy.**

There are even possible future long-term scenarios where large populations and workforces will become problematic in different ways.
